THE SKIN IS OUR THIRD KIDNEY
As many of you already know, our biggest detox organs in the body are our kidneys and livers. When they're not functioning well, we experience all kinds of unpleasant symptoms. But did you ever consider that the skin, encasing your entire body, could also be an important detox organ. Consider the following information and remember that exfoliating your skin is a great way to improve the gateway of substances that are absorbed into and out of your skin.
THERE IS AN AREA OF THE BODY, OUR THIRD KIDNEY, THE SKIN, WHICH GETS NEGLECTED WHEN IT COMES TO TRYING TO MAINTAIN A LESS TOXIC BODY. THOSE ON THE ROAD TO HEALTH OFTEN:
buy organic food
stop eating donuts and drinking coffee and pop
stop ingesting chemicals such as aspartame and artificial food additives
remove toxic cleaners, air fresheners, perfumes and fabric softeners from the house
remove mold from the home environment
stop spraying lawns, (and hopefully soon the golf courses)
carpool and buy more efficient vehicles
ensure their water source is healthy
incorporate exercise into their lives
and try to detoxify the emotional elements within their lives. (Feeling overwhelmed...start with eliminating fabric softener. A good alternative is white vinegar added to the rinse cycle.)
Our two kidneys are a vital part of our detoxification system, along with the liver. Simplistically, they are responsible for filtering toxins and waste from your system. The "third kidney", the skin, is a physical layer that performs many functions such as temperature modulator and barrier to cold, heat and wind, but the quality that gets neglected is the skin's ability to absorb substances. This can be a useful trait when we wish to use a trans-dermal progesterone cream to help balance hormones.
However, when the skin is faced with sunscreen, cosmetics, chlorine/bromine, creams containing toxins such as parabens and propylene glycol, perfume/aftershave, hair remover, antiperspirant, fabric softener, and shampoo, the chemicals are absorbed, they enter the bloodstream and can cause short-term or long-term health issues. Skin diseases, asthma, behavioral issues, hormonal imbalance are some examples of the outcome of using toxic products. Connections have been made between the use of parabens and breast cancer as suggested by molecular biologist Philippa Darbre.
WHAT TO DO?
Start small.
Be informed.
Read your labels.
Clean up the body and clean up your personal world.
